The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control has ordered manufacturers of alcoholic drinks packaged in sachets and plastic bottles smaller than 200ml to immediately recall the products nationwide or risk having their factories shut down.
NAFDAC Director-General, Prof. Mojisola Adeyeye, gave the warning on Monday, saying the Federal Government’s ban on the production, importation, distribution and sale of the products would now be fully enforced. She said manufacturers, distributors, wholesalers, retailers and other stakeholders must surrender all remaining stocks of the banned alcoholic drinks. NAFDAC said recalled products would be verified and destroyed under its supervision, with the affected companies responsible for the cost of destruction.
The agency also warned that factories involved in producing the banned products would not be allowed to reopen until their production lines had been dismantled, disabled or reconfigured to prevent further production of sachet alcohol and other prohibited small-volume packages. Companies that fail to comply could face continued closure, suspension or cancellation of product registrations, placement on NAFDAC’s watchlist and possible criminal prosecution.
According to NAFDAC, the ban is aimed at reducing underage drinking, alcohol abuse and easy access to highly concentrated alcoholic beverages.The agency said the ban officially took effect on January 1, 2026, after manufacturers were given several years to phase out the products and switch to larger packaging. NAFDAC has urged Nigerians to stop buying the banned products and report manufacturers, distributors or sellers who continue to deal in them.
