Nigeria, Egypt Partner to Fight Drug Cartels, Sign Antinarcotics MoU

Nigeria and Egypt are set to strengthen cooperation in the fight against drug trafficking and substance abuse through a new anti narcotics Memorandum of Understanding (MoU). The agreement is expected to boost intelligence sharing, joint operations and training between the two countries as they intensify efforts against international drug cartels operating across Africa.

The planned partnership was announced during a courtesy visit by the Egyptian Ambassador to Nigeria, Mohammed Fouad, to the headquarters of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) in Abuja, where he met with the agency’s Chairman and Chief Executive Officer, Brig. Gen. Mohamed Buba Marwa (retd.).

Nigeria and Egypt Strengthen Anti Narcotics Cooperation

Speaking during the meeting, Marwa said the proposed MoU would deepen the existing relationship between Nigeria and Egypt while providing a stronger institutional framework for tackling illicit drug trafficking.

He noted that drug trafficking remains a global challenge that requires close collaboration among law enforcement agencies across different countries.

Marwa said the NDLEA already works with several international partners, including the United States Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA), the United Kingdom’s National Crime Agency, the UK Border Force, the French Police, the German Criminal Police, and India’s Narcotics Control Bureau.

He expressed confidence that formal cooperation with Egypt would further strengthen Africa’s collective response to transnational drug trafficking.

NDLEA Raises Concern Over International Drug Cartels

Marwa revealed that international drug syndicates are increasingly targeting Africa as authorities tighten enforcement in other parts of the world.

He disclosed that the NDLEA recently dismantled a methamphetamine laboratory valued at approximately 362 million dollars, allegedly operated by Mexican drug traffickers in a remote area of Nigeria.

According to him, the agency also shut down another methamphetamine laboratory linked to foreign suspects in a separate operation.

He said these successes highlight the need for African countries to work together in preventing international drug cartels from establishing operations on the continent.

Egypt Calls for Stronger Continental Partnership

Egyptian Ambassador Mohammed Fouad described Nigeria and Egypt as two of Africa’s leading nations with a shared responsibility to combat narcotics trafficking.

He said stronger bilateral cooperation would help address the growing impact of illicit drugs on communities across the continent.

Fouad explained that his visit was aimed at discussing practical areas of cooperation, including intelligence exchange and strategies that could support the NDLEA’s ongoing efforts against drug trafficking.

Nigeria Expands International Drug Enforcement Partnerships

Nigeria has stepped up efforts to combat drug trafficking and substance abuse in recent years through increased arrests, major drug seizures and the dismantling of illegal drug production facilities.

The NDLEA has also expanded cooperation with international law enforcement agencies as part of its strategy to disrupt transnational criminal networks involved in the production and trafficking of illicit drugs.

The proposed Nigeria Egypt anti narcotics MoU is expected to strengthen those efforts by improving coordination between both countries and enhancing the fight against organised drug crime across Africa.
