The Senate condemns Makinde’s move to invite foreign scrutiny into the abduction of schoolchildren and teachers in Orire Local Government Area of Oyo State.
Lawmakers on Tuesday cautioned Governor Seyi Makinde against calling on foreign human rights organisations, particularly the United Nations, to examine the circumstances surrounding the abduction.
Why the Senate Condemns Makinde’s Statement The upper chamber argued that seeking intervention from foreign organisations on the matter could undermine the federal government’s efforts to tackle insecurity. Lawmakers interpreted Makinde’s statement as capable of diminishing the federal government’s efforts to address insecurity, and also as a potential undermining of Nigeria’s sovereignty.
The resolution followed a motion presented by Senate Leader Opeyemi Bamidele during Tuesday’s plenary. The motion centred on commending President Bola Tinubu, the Armed Forces and other security agencies for their roles in rescuing the abducted schoolchildren and teachers.

One of the prayers of the motion urged Makinde to refrain from making statements that could be interpreted as diminishing the federal government’s efforts to address insecurity.
