Coventry City midfielder Frank Onyeka has explained what powered the Sky Blues to their 2-0 victory over West Bromwich Albion in the EFL Championship on Saturday, Soccernet.ng reports.
The Nigerian international delivered a standout performance in midfield as Coventry ended their long wait for an away win, with goals from Ephron Mason-Clark and Jack Rudoni sealing all three points at The Hawthorns.
Following the game, the Super Eagles midfielder’s impressive display during the game earned him a Man of the Match award.
Frank Onyeka explains Coventry’s winning approach
Speaking after the match, Onyeka expressed his delight at the result and praised the team’s collective effort in securing back-to-back league victories.
“It’s really nice, I like it, we just keep going. It’s a great win away from home,” Onyeka said to Sky Sports. “I know it’s quite difficult, but it’s all about winning. I’m happy that we got the win today and also the last game.”
When asked about Coventry’s control of the contest, the on-loan Brentford midfielder pointed to their defensive shape as the key factor behind the win.
“I mean, we know that especially in the first half when they tried to break us down, but we just decided to stay in the middle block,” Onyeka added. “Don’t give them anything. I think that’s what helped us in the second half.”
Coventry dominate as West Brom struggle
Coventry made a fast start and took the lead inside five minutes when Mason-Clark raced through and lobbed the goalkeeper after a midfield interception involving Onyeka.
The Sky Blues continued to dominate possession and doubled their advantage in the 32nd minute when Rudoni fired a stunning long-range strike into the top corner.
West Brom pushed forward after the break and made several attacking substitutions in search of a response, but Coventry’s defence held firm to preserve the clean sheet.
Goalkeeper Carl Rushworth was rarely troubled as the visitors saw out the game comfortably.
Onyeka’s tireless display earned him the Player of the Match award, with his energy and physical presence proving vital in breaking up West Brom’s attacks and maintaining Coventry’s structure.
Under manager Frank Lampard, Coventry have now recorded successive league wins and strengthened their push for promotion, while West Brom remain under pressure after extending their winless run.
The result leaves Coventry firmly in the promotion race and puts them forward in their campaign as they look to build on this impressive away performance.
