The Delta State Police Command has arrested nine suspects during a statewide operation targeting illegal roadblocks and unauthorised revenue collection along major highways in the state.
The operation, which commenced on Friday, was launched in compliance with the Federal Government’s directive to eliminate extortion and other criminal activities on Nigerian roads.
In a statement issued on Sunday, the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Bright Edafe, said the enforcement exercise focused on notorious locations where illegal toll collection and roadblocks have hindered free movement and posed security risks to motorists.
According to the police, the suspects were apprehended at strategic locations, including the Head Bridge axis along the Delta Anambra boundary and the Benin Asaba Expressway near Agbor.
“The Delta State Police Command has launched a statewide clampdown on illegal roadblocks and unauthorised revenue collection along highways, in strict compliance with the Federal Government’s directive to rid Nigerian roads of extortion and criminal activities,” the statement said.
The command confirmed that all nine suspects are currently in police custody and will be charged to court upon the conclusion of investigations.
The police reaffirmed their commitment to restoring order and ensuring the safety of motorists and commuters across the state’s highways, adding that similar enforcement operations will be extended to other parts of Delta State.
The command also appealed to members of the public to cooperate with law enforcement officers as the ongoing crackdown continues.
