The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has sealed three alcohol manufacturing companies in Ota, Ogun State, for allegedly violating the Federal Government’s ban on the production of alcoholic beverages in sachets and polyethylene terephthalate (PET) bottles.
The enforcement operation was carried out by officials from NAFDAC’s Investigation and Enforcement Directorate under the leadership of Assistant Director Kunle Ojo. According to the agency, inspections conducted at the affected factories revealed multiple breaches of regulatory directives.
At the first facility, officials discovered that sachet alcoholic drinks were still being produced, while large quantities of PET bottles were also found on the premises. Although production activities were initially suspended, a follow-up inspection revealed that the sachet alcohol previously placed under regulatory hold had been secretly removed without the agency’s approval, an action NAFDAC described as a serious violation.
During an inspection of the second company, enforcement officers reportedly found that the factory was still producing sachet alcoholic beverages despite the nationwide prohibition. The premises were immediately sealed. NAFDAC also revisited a third factory that had earlier been sanctioned in January after 22 production machines, millions of PET bottles and large quantities of sachet packaging materials were confiscated and placed under restriction pending destruction.
However, inspectors discovered that the company had allegedly broken the official seals, resumed operations and continued producing the banned alcoholic products. Additional millions of PET bottles were also found at the site, prompting the agency to seal the factory once again.
Reaffirming its commitment to enforcing existing regulations, NAFDAC stated that the operation forms part of its ongoing efforts to ensure full compliance with the nationwide ban on sachet alcoholic drinks and to safeguard public health.The agency also urged members of the public to report the illegal production or sale of banned sachet alcoholic beverages to the nearest NAFDAC office.
