Nigeria’s Ambassador-designate to Mexico, Reno Omokri, has dismissed reports claiming that the Mexican government rejected his diplomatic appointment, attributing the delay in assuming office to logistical arrangements surrounding the ongoing FIFA World Cup co-hosted by Mexico and the United States.
Speaking during an interview on Channels Television’s Politics Today, Omokri described the rejection claims as false, insisting they were being spread by political opponents.
According to him, the Mexican government is currently focused on hosting the World Cup, which has affected the processing of diplomatic activities, including the arrival of newly appointed ambassadors. Omokri noted that he is not the only Nigerian envoy yet to resume duties, explaining that several ambassador-designates are in a similar situation.
He maintained that the delay is purely administrative and not a result of any diplomatic disagreement between Nigeria and Mexico. The former presidential aide also accused opposition figures of promoting misleading narratives about his appointment, stressing that such claims do not reflect the reality of Nigeria’s diplomatic relations.
He expressed confidence that Nigeria continues to enjoy cordial ties with countries around the world and said host nations would receive Nigerian envoys once the necessary processes are concluded.
