Victor Osimhen could be facing a lengthy spell on the sidelines after suffering a serious arm injury during Galatasaray S.K.’s UEFA Champions League clash against Liverpool FC at Anfield.

The Nigerian striker completed the first half despite taking a heavy blow, but medical checks at halftime ruled him out of the second period.

A statement released by Galatasaray suggests that subsequent hospital examinations confirmed a fracture in his right forearm, raising concerns about a potential long-term absence.

Worst-case scenario: 3 to 5 months out

In a worst-case scenario involving surgery, such as the insertion of plates or screws, the recovery timeline typically progresses in stages.

The first two weeks are usually dedicated to post-surgery recovery, with the arm immobilised to allow initial healing. This is followed by a six to eight-week period where the bone continues to heal, although activity remains limited.

Between eight and twelve weeks, rehabilitation begins, with a gradual return to light training as strength and mobility improve.

A full return to competitive football can then be expected between twelve and twenty weeks, depending on how well recovery progresses.

For a striker like Osimhen, medical staff are likely to take a cautious approach, given the physical demands of his playing style.

Huge blow for Galatasaray and Nigeria

Osimhen’s absence would be a significant setback for Galatasaray, who rely heavily on his goals and physical presence in attack.

The Nigerian has not been listed in Eric Chelle’s roster for the upcoming friendly games later this month. However, it raises concerns for crucial fixtures, as a prolonged injury layoff could disrupt his match fitness.

How Victor Osimhen sustained injury in aerial duel

The 27-year-old sustained the injury after an awkward fall during an aerial challenge in the first half against Liverpool. He landed heavily on his arm, immediately showing signs of discomfort before receiving treatment on the pitch.

Although he attempted to continue, the pain worsened, which prompted his withdrawal at halftime to ultimately prevent further damage.

Surgery decision next

Galatasaray’s medical team will make a final decision on surgery after further evaluations in the coming days. If the fracture is stable, conservative treatment could shorten his recovery time slightly.

If surgery is necessary, Osimhen could miss four months or more, making this one of the biggest injuries of the season.
