A Nigerian national has been arrested in Vietnam after authorities allegedly discovered 2kg of suspected crystal methamphetamine and two suspected bricks of heroin concealed inside a consignment from Laos.
VietnamPlus reported that the drugs were intercepted at the Lao Bao International Border Gate in Quang Tri Province after customs officials detected suspicious images during a scan of a package.
Drugs Hidden in Electrical EquipmentThe incident was reportedly uncovered at about 8:30pm on August 5 while customs officers were inspecting vehicles entering Vietnam from Laos. A physical inspection of the consignment allegedly revealed the drugs hidden inside electric water heaters and electronic components, which were used to conceal the substances.
The discovery prompted a wider investigation involving several Vietnamese law enforcement agencies, including customs officials, police, anti-smuggling investigators and the provincial Border Guard. Authorities subsequently began tracing the intended recipient of the package.
Nigerian Suspect Arrested in Ho Chi Minh City After several days of tracking the consignment across different locations, officers arrested Izuchukwu Calistus Odyssey, a Nigerian national born in 1983. He was arrested on August 9 in Ho Chi Minh City while reportedly receiving the package. According to the report, Odionye admitted that the consignment contained drugs.He allegedly told investigators that he had been hired to receive the package in Ho Chi Minh City and transport it to Hanoi.
Investigation Continues Vietnamese authorities have expanded the investigation to identify other individuals who may have been involved in the alleged drug trafficking operation. Officials are continuing to investigate the origin of the consignment and the roles of other people connected to the case. The allegations against the suspect have not been established in court.
