The Federal Government has announced plans to evacuate another 83 Nigerians from South Africa amid concerns over rising Afrophobic attacks and anti-foreigner sentiments.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs said the returnees are expected to arrive at Murtala Muhammed International Airport, Lagos, on Wednesday, August 19, 2026. Returnees to Arrive in Lagos According to the ministry, the Nigerians will leave Oliver Tambo Airport, Johannesburg, at 3:35pm local time aboard South African Airways. Their arrival in Lagos is expected at approximately 8:45pm. The evacuation was made possible through the intervention and sponsorship of air tickets by private individuals.
The ministry expressed appreciation to the sponsors for supporting the return of the Nigerians. Nearly 1,490 Nigerians Already Repatriated The latest evacuation follows the conclusion of the Federal Government’s voluntary repatriation programme, through which nearly 1,490 Nigerians have been repatriated from South Africa amid concerns over attacks and discrimination against foreigners. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs said the government remains committed to protecting the welfare and dignity of Nigerians living at home and abroad.
It also described Nigerians in the diaspora as “critical assets for national development” under its Citizen Diplomacy agenda.FG Seeks Stronger Action Against Afrophobia The government called on private-sector organisations, state governments, corporate bodies and other Nigerians to support efforts aimed at responding to consular emergencies.
The ministry also said Nigeria would continue diplomatic engagement with South Africa to address the causes of Afrophobia and prevent attacks and discrimination against Nigerians.It urged South African authorities to ensure that perpetrators of violence against Nigerians are held accountable.
The Federal Government further commended the private individuals and philanthropists who sponsored the latest evacuation, describing their support as an example of a “whole-of-society approach” to protecting Nigerians abroad.
