Cross River State Governor, Bassey Otu, has warned traditional rulers across the state that they could lose their certificates of recognition if they fail to maintain peace in their communities.The governor, represented by his deputy, Peter Odey, gave the warning on Monday during the 21st Leboku International New Yam Festival at the Yakurr Peace Stadium in Ugep.
The warning followed the recent violent clash between the Ugep and Idomi communities in Yakurr Local Government Area, which reportedly resulted in loss of lives. Otu described the conflict as a “show of shame” and said traditional rulers must take greater responsibility for preventing violence and promoting peaceful coexistence.
He said the state government would no longer recognise traditional institutions or factions that allow disorder to continue in their domains.The governor also revealed that the government had considered cancelling this year’s Leboku festival because of the crisis but decided to proceed because the festival is meant to promote peace, unity and brotherhood among the Yakurr people.
Otu urged traditional rulers to intensify efforts to prevent conflicts and warned that failure to maintain peace could lead to sanctions, including the withdrawal of their certificates of recognition.
