The Federal Government has urged journalists and social media influencers to avoid giving terrorists and bandits the publicity they seek through news reports and online content.
Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, made the appeal during the maiden edition of the Arewa Media Summit in Kano.
He said the media plays a vital role in promoting national unity and should avoid becoming a platform for violent groups to spread fear and propaganda.
According to him, responsible journalism can help strengthen resilience and foster hope among citizens. The minister also stressed the importance of professionalism, fairness, and integrity in journalism, noting that democracy thrives when the government is transparent, citizens participate responsibly, and the media performs its constitutional role effectively.
He warned that while digital technology and social media have made information more accessible, they have also increased the spread of fake news and disinformation, which can threaten national unity and weaken public trust.
The government also urged social media influencers to verify information before sharing it and avoid content capable of creating division, especially as the country prepares for the 2027 general elections.
