Nigeria and Germany have reaffirmed their commitment to expanding bilateral cooperation, with both countries agreeing to deepen collaboration in renewable energy, technology, security, trade and investment during a high level meeting in Abuja.
The commitment was made during talks between Nigeria’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Bianca Odumegwu Ojukwu, and Germany’s Federal Foreign Minister, Johann Wadephul, as both nations seek stronger economic and strategic ties.
Nigeria Seeks More InvestmentSpeaking during the meeting, Odumegwu Ojukwu described Germany as one of Nigeria’s most important strategic partners in Europe, noting that the relationship now extends beyond diplomacy to include trade, renewable energy, education, vocational training, science, technology, migration and security.
She said Nigeria is committed to strengthening cooperation in areas such as renewable energy, artificial intelligence, critical minerals, manufacturing, agriculture, healthcare, infrastructure and the green economy.
The minister also encouraged greater German investment in Nigeria, highlighting the Federal Government’s economic reforms aimed at improving the business environment and attracting foreign investors.
Germany Pledges Stronger Economic TiesGerman Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul reaffirmed Berlin’s commitment to expanding economic cooperation with Nigeria, describing the relationship as a strategic partnership that has lasted for more than 65 years.
He noted that trade between both countries grew by 10 percent over the past year, adding that Nigeria remains one of Germany’s key trading partners in Africa.
Wadephul said the Nigeria Germany Business Forum would continue to promote investment opportunities and announced that more German companies are expected to invest in Nigeria, particularly in the energy sector.
Focus on Security and Regional StabilityBoth ministers also discussed regional security challenges, including terrorism, violent extremism and organised crime across West Africa.
Nigeria commended Germany’s continued support for ECOWAS in promoting peace, democratic governance and regional integration, while Germany pledged to continue supporting efforts to improve security across the Sahel region.
The meeting forms part of Nigeria’s broader strategy to attract foreign investment, strengthen international partnerships and accelerate economic growth through collaboration in energy, technology, infrastructure and industrial development.
