The Presidency has disclosed that eight suspects linked to the abduction of 46 pupils and teachers in Oriire Local Government Area of Oyo State are now in the custody of the Department of State Services (DSS).
Presidential spokesman Bayo Onanuga said the suspects were arrested during the rescue operation that secured the freedom of the victims after 56 days in captivity.
He added that several other kidnappers were neutralised during the operation. According to Onanuga, the rescue mission was successfully carried out without any concessions to the abductors.
He explained that despite the kidnappers’ demand for the release of one of their leaders, the government refused because the suspect is already facing prosecution for alleged crimes.
He noted that the relevant security agencies would provide a detailed account of the rescue operation in due course.
The Presidency had earlier confirmed that all the abducted pupils and teachers had been rescued safely by Nigerian security agencies, bringing an end to their weeks-long captivity.
