President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has directed the Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (FCCPC) to investigate major technology companies, including Meta, Google, X, and generative AI platforms operating in Nigeria.
The investigation follows a petition by the Nigerian Press Organisation (NPO), which alleges that these companies have: Engaged in anti-competitive practices.
Used Nigerian news content without fair compensation. Undermined the commercial viability of Nigerian media organisations.Potentially infringed on the rights of content creators and publishers.
The FCCPC will examine whether the companies’ actions violate Nigeria’s competition and consumer protection laws. The probe will also look into concerns over how certain generative AI platforms use media content.
The directive comes amid increased regulatory scrutiny of global technology companies operating in Nigeria. The FCCPC has previously taken enforcement action against Meta over consumer protection and data privacy concerns.
