President Bola Tinubu has approved the conversion of the Federal Polytechnic, Nasarawa, into the Federal University of Mining, Engineering and Technology, Nasarawa, to strengthen technical education and support the development of Nigeria’s solid minerals sector.
The approval was announced by the President’s Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga.
According to the Presidency, the upgrade aligns with the administration’s commitment to developing human capital, expanding technical education, and unlocking the country’s vast solid minerals potential.
The proposal for the specialised university was put forward by Senator Ahmed Wadada Aliyu, who argued that Nasarawa State’s rich mineral resources make it an ideal location for an institution focused on mining and engineering education.
The new university is expected to provide world-class education, research, and innovation in mining, engineering, mineral processing, metallurgy, manufacturing, and emerging technologies.
It will also train the skilled workforce needed to promote value addition, technological advancement, and the sustainable development of Nigeria’s mineral resources.
President Tinubu has directed the Federal Ministry of Education, the National Universities Commission (NUC), and other relevant agencies to begin the necessary processes for the conversion in line with existing laws and regulations.
The Presidency said the move reflects the administration’s commitment to using education as a driver of economic growth, innovation, job creation, and national development.
